Monkey Movie Review – The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2014)

Well, I had a review written and WordPress deleted it.  Thanks WordPress!  Now I have to write it again.  Well I don’t have to but I should for this movie.

This is a movie that I turned off at the midpoint.  Just not funny, saw where it was going, and a terrible waste of fine comedic actors.

Get this, Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, James Gandolfini, Alan Arkin, Jay Mohr.  How about could the movie go wrong?  Well it does.

First, Carrell’s character is so despicable that when you see the turn coming, it’s just not interesting.  Olivia Wilde is interesting and beautiful, but a dumb character.  She takes him in after he’s been nothing but despicable, shallow and insulting?  Doesn’t make sense.

Second, Jim Carrey plays Jim Carrey.  He can’t help it.  You’ve seen the character on In Living Color, SNL, Ace Venture, etc.   Not funny.

Wonderstone breaks up with his buddy who he has been doing a show with (albeit stale) for 10 years.  So what will happen?  Yes, they wll get back together.  But first he attempts to do his buddy show by himself?  Doesn’t make sense and not funny.

Look, I get the “making fun of Chris Angel, Siegfried and Roy and David Blaine” – I get it.  But Burt’s “David Copperfield” show is no better.  And the script is tired and predictable.  And so is the acting.

This movie is just heartless.  The characters are one dimensional.  The plot is basic.  The acting is obvious.

On a scale of one to five bananas, Monkey flings one banana.  It’s not useless, but it’s not funny.
